Um ehrlich zu sein, finde ich japanische Elektronikgeschäfte nicht besonders einladend. Vor allem sind sie viel zu hell, teilweise schon grell – und die schiere Anzahl an bunten Plakaten und Werbeschildern, die jedes Produkt anpreisen, ist einfach ermüdend. Anders halt …

Und dann die Auswahl: Bei den aufgehängten Klimaanlagen verliert man schnell den Überblick. Auf dem Foto sieht man nur einen Teil – insgesamt waren es bestimmt 60 Modelle. Von klein und kompakt bis groß und preislich offen nach oben.

Da wir platztechnisch ziemlich eingeschränkt sind, durfte die Anlage nicht breiter als 75 cm sein – also fiel die Wahl auf eine eher kleinere Anlage.

Bei der Auswahl ist die Raumgröße ebenfalls ein Thema. Hier in Japan wird die Größe des Raumes noch in Tatami-Matten ausgerechnet und bezeichnet. Eine Tatami-Matte ist etwa 176 cm × 88 cm, so hat man einen Richtwert, wie viel Power oder welche Größe die Klimaanlage am besten haben sollte. Ebenfalls ist die Frage, ob nicht nur gekühlt werden soll, sondern auch geheizt, wie effizient die Maschine ist sowie welche Extras sie hat und wie hoch der Geräuschpegel ist.

Installiert werden soll sie schon diese Woche – bin gespannt, wie es wird und ob alles funktioniert. Bei der Recherche gibt es unter anderem Webseiten mit ganzen Erklärungen bzw. Übersetzungen der Funktionen und der Fernbedienung.

That went quicker than expected — and suddenly, we had an air conditioner sitting in the back of the car.

To be honest, I don’t really find Japanese electronics stores all that inviting. They’re often incredibly bright — almost harsh — and packed with colorful signs shouting about every possible feature of every product. It’s overwhelming. Just… a lot.

Choosing a unit wasn’t exactly straightforward either. The display wall alone had around 60 models, from compact budget options to full-sized systems with no upper price limit in sight. The photo I took doesn’t even show all of them.

Space is tight in our apartment, so the width of the unit became the main deciding factor — nothing over 75 cm. That narrowed it down pretty fast.

Then there’s the whole “room size” thing. In Japan, they still use tatami mats as a unit of measurement — each mat being roughly 176 x 88 cm — which helps you figure out what capacity you’ll need. But beyond that, you’re also looking at: does it heat as well as cool? How energy-efficient is it? How loud? Any extra features?

If all goes well, it should be installed sometime this week.
Fingers crossed everything works.
And yes, there are entire websites dedicated to translating Japanese air conditioner remote controls — that’s how deep the rabbit hole goes.
